Pricing / Ask before agreeing
A clear scope makes a better estimate.
Prepare a few practical questions. The lock, vehicle, parts and access conditions determine the work involved.

Describe the result you need
A spare car key, access to a locked home and a full change of key access are different requests. Explain what works now and what you want to change. Include the number of cylinders or keys, any replacement parts already purchased and known access restrictions so the estimate addresses the real job.
Separate the charges
Ask about a service-call or visit charge, labor, hardware and any key cutting or programming. Clarify which functions and quantities are included. If you compare two estimates, compare the same scope: replacing an entire lock is not identical to rekeying its existing cylinder.
Agree before the scope changes
Inspection may reveal a different cause or unsuitable hardware. Ask why the proposed work has changed and request a revised estimate before authorizing it. Make sure the authorized decision-maker can be reached during the visit, especially for a leased shop or managed residential building.
Finish with a useful record
Request an invoice identifying the work and charges. Check the agreed door or key functions and ask about any applicable follow-up or warranty terms. Keep the record with your key inventory so it is clear which entrances or vehicle functions were included.
