More than one generation of hardware
An older house may have replacement locks on some doors and earlier fittings on others. Identify the doors included in the request and any hardware that differs. Ask about compatibility before requesting one key for the whole property, and explain whether preserving a handle or escutcheon is important.
A lockout at a shared or separate unit
Specify whether you are locked out of the building itself or a separate residential unit. A landlord-managed door may require authorization beyond a resident’s own key. Arrange permission and an authorized meeting contact so the scope is clear before any work on a common entrance is discussed.
A repair that addresses the symptom
Tell us if a door locks easily when open but resists when shut, or whether the key itself is worn or bent. An alignment issue and a cylinder issue should not be treated as interchangeable. Avoid forcing the key while waiting to discuss suitable assessment and repair options.
Confirm what the new key changes
After a rekey, record which cylinders were included and keep any keys needed for untouched doors. Mechanical key changes do not update electronic credentials or garage controls. Test normal opening and closing, and ask for an invoice describing the agreed work and charges.
